The shimmering purple Colorado hairstreak butterfly (Hypaurotis crysalus) dwells in the forest canopy of that state and much of theSouthwest. Never venturing far from its host plant, the Gambel oak (Quercus gambeli), it feeds on tree sap and fallen raindrops.
